City Region Issues

Mayoral Elections

  • Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce to continue to have an input in the run-up to the elections, with a view of continuing engagement after the election to ensure positive and effective implementation.

  • Ensure that the mayoral elections remain focused on economic development and local issues, not just on national political differences.

Greater Manchester Combined Authority / City Region

  • Incorporate relevant city-region-wide initiatives and work programmes such as the Inclusive Growth agenda into campaign material and activity.

  • Look at issues of quality and accessibility of business support – for both small and large companies (not from the Chamber, from other sources).

  • Identify ways to attract larger companies to invest in the UK and Greater Manchester, perhaps look at what Ireland does as an example with tax-breaks, research grants etc.

  • Local skills requirements and devolving further powers from Whitehall – the role of the apprenticeship levy.

  • Keep well-informed of local authority changes and possible impact on devolution/mayoral issues.
