Tameside LCC - Summary of Meeting
10th March 2009, 8-10am
Stalybridge Fire Station.

The most recent meeting of the Chamber's focus group for Tameside, the Local Chamber Council, was held on 13th Jan at Stalybridge Fire Station. The following briefly explains what was discussed.

The ‘Tameside Works First' Programme is up and running. The programme is worth £12m (£10m capital, £2m revenue) of business to local companies and it will open up dealing with the council. There is a group meeting within the Local Authority making sure it is having an impact locally. The Local Chamber Council President has written a letter in support of the scheme to the Leader of the Council.

Those who'd attended James Purnell MP's event  looking for solutions for businesses during the downturn reported that it was a good and worthwhile event.

Progress of the new partnership between Broadway Industrial Estate and the Local Authority aimed at bringing CCTV to the estate was reported on. The main action now if to get businesses to agree to the deal offered.

There was a discussion as to what the group think the Local Authority should do with the £707K of LABGI money (Local Area Business Growth Incentive) they are due to receive from the government. Even though this money is not ring fenced, it is worth giving the Local Authority a wish list of what the Chamber would like to see the money used for. Perhaps Business Security Grants could be mooted? It could also have a nice link with the Tameside Works First programme as local businesses could be used to fit extra security.

There have now been 3 good networking events held at Stalybridge Celtic. Speed networking was conducted at the last meeting and new ideas are being thought of for the future.

The Chamber Local Managers conducted a telephone survey of members in the previous week. The survey looked at businesses views and experiences of the downturn and the effectiveness of government action taken so far. Click for more information on the results.

Next Meeting - 9th June, provisionally to be at Stalybridge Fire Station, but venue tbc.
