Having reduced NEET substantially, one local high school in Manchester has now decided to invest additional resources in improving attendance by commissioning a Connexions adviser to work with the “persistent absence” tutor group to raise aspirations and promote their engagement in learning.

What we offer

A range of targeted support services for young people aged 13-19, and up to age 25 for people with learning difficulties and/or disabilities. The services tackle a wide range of issues that present as barriers to progression.

Our targeted support services work with young people on a variety of issues such as non-engagement, low motivation and aspirations, mental health, substance misuse, offending behaviour and teenage pregnancy, Advisers can help with re-engaging pupils/students into learning and employment. We work with families and pastoral staff to develop networks of support.

In addition our advisers provide impartial information, advice and guidance on careers and education, employment and training opportunities. Where appropriate their support can continue through job search and placing activities to ensure an effective transition is made into education, employment or training.

Delivery method

Targeted Youth Support Services are currently delivered by Careers Solutions on behalf of a number of local authorities. Delivery is flexible and takes place in a variety of locations including schools, colleges, Connexions centres, agency bases and outreach locations.

The service is delivered by highly experienced Careers Solutions staff trained to support young people from all backgrounds, including those not in education, employment or training (NEET), young offenders, care leavers, those with mental health needs and teenage parents.

Our Priority Grid diagnostic tool is used to aid early identification of issues and focus interventions to young people most in need. All advisers are trained to carry out holistic assessments of need and to use the Common Assessment Framework.

Benefits

The best way to reduce the proportion of young people who are NEET is to intervene early to prevent them experiencing barriers to participation. We work with a variety of other agencies, parents/carers and partners to engage young people, raise aspirations and support progression and attainment.

Further Information

All of our services have been developed to allow for flexibility. They have been costed in a way that allows delivery to be specified or packaged in a variety of ways to suit your individual needs. Together with the services above, we offer a range of bespoke activities to develop enterprising behaviour and employability skills. We are also working closely with the Skills Funding Agency to develop and implement the new National Careers Service.
