Date: 16/03/2018

A Bolton bar is doing its bit to save the environment by switching from plastic to paper straws. Great Ale at the Vaults, in the market place shopping centre recently ditched single use plastic straws for biodegradable paper ones. The motivation behind the decision was the recent hit BBC series Blue Planet 2, which highlighted the damage that discarded plastic was doing to the world’s oceans and marine life.

Steve Simms, who runs the bar with his wife Anne said: “We’ve been doing it for four or five weeks now. It was the staff who actually brought it to my attention after watching the Blue Planet TV show.”

“We’re trying to cut down on the use of plastic as much as we can!”

“It was a bit sad actually, the show, which is why I thought we had to do something. We’re trying to cut down on using as much plastics as much as we can. We found out what is does in the water to whales and other creatures, so we’re trying to shift away from it as much as possible. Obviously we cant change all of it but we can do our bit.”
