Diane Elebert-Morgan, Kickstart Scheme Manager at Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce, outlines the benefits of Kickstart.
The Government launched the Kickstart Scheme in September 2020, when the UK was already five months into the global Covid pandemic.
The scheme had the dual purpose of addressing the huge numbers of young people going on to Universal Credit and helping employers to create fully funded roles within their business for a six-month period.
When I took the position to manage Kickstart for GMCC, I was quite overwhelmed with the offering. You know when you think something is too good to be true?! But even weeks into the project, I could see it was straightforward, accessible for most and with no hidden terms! Eleven months on and I can genuinely say it’s been a labour of love.
As an employer it’s as simple as deciding you want to create a role (or several roles), committing to training a potentially inexperienced person in your workplace and then providing some basic business information and we do the rest!
Working with over 300 employers across Greater Manchester, building fantastic relationships with amazing people at DWP, we have placed 250 brilliant young people into work! I am a pretty emotional person (I know those who know me will be nodding and smiling now!) but this has made me cry (happy tears of course) on many occasions already.
The scheme is set to run until December this year, I imagine last applications will be November to allow time for the application and recruitment process.
I can’t stress enough how important this is. I urge all employers to take part. It’s creating jobs, changing lives and making a difference.
