Willow Wood were thrilled to welcome 25 volunteers from Stockport based Hurst Accountants on Friday 1 October on their Charity Away Day.

Hurst have chosen Willow Wood as their charity of the year, following our care of trainee accountant Abby Carey’s mother.  As well as holding a number of fundraising events throughout the year, members of staff gave up their time to help in a number of different areas at the Hospice.

Elaine McConnell, Willow Wood’s community and corporate fundraiser said: “Corporate volunteering is a huge support for us.  Today we’ve met some lovely and very enthusiastic people who have worked in a number of different areas of the Hospice, and have helped us enormously.

“Working behind the scenes in both our Stalybridge shops, on Grosvenor Street and the Pad store on Shepley Street, at our warehouse and distribution centre in Ashton and at the Hospice itself, their concerted efforts have done so much to help us. By sorting donations, by steaming and pricing garments and by undertaking a number of jobs in our offices, it’s easy to see how their Charity Away Day has helped us.  Moreover there are real benefits for companies as well.

“Being part of a corporate volunteering team can improve team building and communication skills, increase motivation and enhance self-confidence.  And it really does have the feelgood factor.  The team can see that they are making a positive contribution and a real difference.”

Jo Gibson and Alexandra Nibloc (pictured) both agree. During the day the two young ladies spent part of their time organising and numbering tombola prizes, which will be used at future events such as Willow Wood’s Winter Fete, which this year is being held at Bower Fold, Stalybridge on Saturday 13 November.  And not only had they really enjoyed spending the time at the Hospice, they both realised that they had unused gift sets, bottles of wine that they wouldn’t drink and other unwanted items that could be repurposed and used as prizes to raise funds.
