Members of Greater Manchester Chamber Val Dickinson (Defero Consultancy Ltd) and Sarah Bennett (Tech and Toast Ltd) bonded over a shared interest in social media and digital marketing. Since their initial meeting they have become firm friends. On paper, some could think that they are in competition. This is not how they see it. It’s all about collaboration.

Val and Sarah have both delivered individually social media training workshops and are keen to share their expertise, especially with groups that need support, including SMEs, Start-ups, Charities  and individual  that lack marketing and digital skills.

Sarah (pictured left) said: “Being part of GMCC has encouraged me to grow my business. I’ve also made some great friends along the way,” Val commented, “GMCC has widened my horizons in relation to meeting like-minded business people who require Digital Marketing Skills.” Both agree that the camaraderie between business owners and support is fantastic.

Tameside Business Woman and local Entrepreneur Val Dickinson of Defero Consultancy Ltd started Defero Consultancy a Boutique Marketing Company in February 2013 and as she approaches her 6th year into self employment the business has gone from strength to strength. Val is no stranger to awards as she has been nominated twice for a Northern Power Woman Award for the categories ‘One to Watch’ and ‘Mentor of the Year’ and been a finalist twice in the Pride of Tameside Business Awards and a finalist in the Northwest area FSB awards for Micro Business of the Year.

Sarah, of Tech and Toast Ltd is an experienced social media consultant and trainer, having worked with high street names, statutory organisations and SMEs both in the UK and overseas. Sarah is also an experienced blogger and writer.

Sarah won the Lancashire Women In Business Best in Digital, Creative and Technology in 2016 and keenly supports parents starting businesses - as she, as a mother of two little ones understands the challenges that juggling children and self-employment can create! Currently involved in teaching on a prison entrepreneurship programme, Sarah strongly believes that everyone can learn digital skills with the right amount of TLC.

Val (pictured right) and her team are also passionate about supporting SMEs and Women’s Groups with all aspects of their marketing and social media. In particular, Val has an affinity with Women Entrepreneurs over 50 who are in the process of starting their own business. She is also a Mentor Advisor for the Business Growth Hub based in Manchester.

Val and Sarah are working in collaboration to provide Social Media training to local business owners. Their events aptly named ‘Spring Clean your Social Media’ are starting this spring in Ashton, with the aim of rolling them out in other boroughs around Tameside, Glossop and Manchester. The training will be “ bite-sized” and has been split into two sessions; Twitter and LinkedIn, Facebook and Instagram. Each session will incorporate:

  • Introduction to Social Media
  • Current stats and trends
  • Creating a great strategy
  • Communication
  • How to create engaging content
  • Staying on the right side of the law (GDPR)
  • Growing an online community and loyal audience
  • Time saving tips
