Ian Powell, Head of Group Development for Lowbury Developments and Greater Manchester Chamber Property & Construction Committee member, and Janet Crabtree, Senior Consultant for the Vinden partnership, who is also a Chamber member, have been attending MIPIM for 21 years

Their first venture into Cannes was in 1999. Twenty-one years later, they have seen significant changes over the years both in the number and variety of attendees also in a wide variety of client and property industry sector opportunities, from the redevelopment of the Palais conferences centre, mid 2000’s and recent expansion onto the beach and marina venues, attending private developer parties live gigs on the beach such as the stranglers, ELO, & Squeeze to name a few, to team boule events in Square Brougham adjacent Café Roma, or simply a coffee at the back of the market.

Ian said: “MIPIM has changed immensely and has provided us with the opportunity to develop strong relationship with other delegates and participants not just from the NW but further afield.

“Attending many launches and receptions in the bunker, chateaus, marina and anchored MIPIM flotilla in the bay, there is still a constant buzz in the air, including the fringe, which is an important necessity to the weeks programme, all have reinforced the events reputation as the property event to go to."

Why do they still go?

“Because we believe the people conduit of MIPIM and all its foibles still generates substantial business opportunities and importantly interest in what the people of the North West have to offer."

What’s changed?

“Investment is always the changing factor, investment in MIPIM, investment in people and the way money moves as always is the absolute dictator in our industry and how MIPIM has developed over the years."

What would they advise?

“First timers plan, plan, plan, be selective in your diary, drink lots of water!! maybe something a little stronger later on in the day. Make it enjoyable not hard work. Always follow up any meetings or snippets on your return."

After 21 years Ian and Janet have acquired long lasting friends, clients and importantly business. For the North West the MIPIM spirit is ever strong and still provides the very best the world can offer in the real estate industry on a global stage.
