Every year in May, Hits Radio Cash for Kids run a Superhero Day campaign to celebrate the children in Greater Manchester who are fighting daily battles, the heroes who don’t wear capes.

In May 2018, Superhero Day was in aid of Teenage Cancer Trust, to help the children on Ward 84 of the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital. Thanks to the amazing support of local businesses, schools, nurseries and individuals, Cash for Kids raised an incredible £103,220 on the day!

This donation funded the refurbishment of a bone marrow treatment room at the hospital. Before the upgrade, the treatment room was  dark and unwelcoming with no entertainment or storage facilities. Now it's been transformed with teenagers and young adults in mind, to help keep their lives as normal as possible during cancer treatment.

The room is kitted out with a TV, DVD player, gaming station and Wi-Fi, and there's also a drop-down guest bed so friends and family can stay overnight comfortably, just like they would at home. As well as this room, the donation also funded ten years of activities for the children, such as social pizza nights, pamper sessions, cinema nights and magic shows.

On Thursday 14th March, the Cash for Kids team headed to the hospital, along with Hits Radio presenter Gemma Atkinson and her Strictly Come Dancing boyfriend Gorka Marquez, to surprise the children and officially open the treatment room!

Gemma said: “It was brilliant to see the new treatment room today following Cash for Kids' incredible Superhero Day last year. Our amazing Hits Radio listeners and Cash for Kids supporters have been able to make a massive difference to support young people living with cancer living in and around Manchester.”

Superhero Day is back again on Friday 10th May! This time Cash for Kids are teaming up with CLIC Sargent, raising funds so they they can help more families in Greater Manchester to cope when the doctor says “your child has cancer”. CLIC Sargent lift children up when cancer knocks them down, holding their hand every step of the way.
