The Factory is looking for a training provider partner or partners in four key areas.

The Factory is a new Arts centre for the North and will open in 2021. It is made up of a 5000 capacity warehouse and a 1400 seater theatre. It is funded by the Treasury £90mil and MCC £40mil (approx values).

Manchester City Council and Manchester International Festival are the client and end user of The Factory. Designed by OMA and built by Laing O’Rourke this landmark building will be the cultural anchor in the new St Johns Quarter of the City.

The Factory will take the model of Manchester International Festival around producing new work that will be made and premiered in Manchester

A core part of The Factory vision is to develop a training academy to benefit the people of Manchester. Factory Academy will be a new world class training brand, operating out of The Factory.

The ultimate aim of Factory Academy is to diversify the workforce and we will create new entry level apprenticeships for technicians, producers, managers and front of house staff.

A GM Cultural Skills Consortium has been formed made up of initially 20 orgs who have signed up to diversify the sector and create apprenticeships.

The Factory will employ 15 apprentices every year and the consortium will employ 35. Meaning 50 apprentices starting every two years (if a standard takes 2 years). We also have interest from national arts organisations for training

The Factory Academy will deliver the 20% off the job training using specialist staff to train and using up to date equipment in venues. This will be a truly employer led model.

In addition to the core apprenticeship competence, Factory Academy will embed experience or modules on: international working, digital technology and personal and professional development.

The first apprenticeship programme, for eight creative venue technicians is in development and delivery will start in September 2019. Employers involved are; HOME, Contact, Royal Exchange, The Lowry, Royal Shakespeare Company, Ambassador Theatre Group and Hull Trucks.

Ultimately the vision is to develop Factory Academy as a stand alone social enterprise and The Factory is looking for a partner or partners to work with on a pilot to build towards this vision. The success criteria for the model are: accessible, high quality and sustainable.

To achieve the above The Factory is looking for a training provider partner or partners in four key areas with one designated project manager:

  • pre-apprenticeship - developing pipelines of talent and putting people on pre apprenticeship courses and T-Levels
  • Apprenticeship delivery up to level 4- partner to work with us to access funding and create a commercially sustainable employer led business model. The preference here is partnership, rather than sub contracting
  • Higher level apprenticeship development and research and innovation around digital training methods
  • Workforce development - access funding to upskill the existing workforce and run training programmes for new tutors
