Our guest speaker for September will be Matt Bennett
Matt was Managing Director of DRB Group Ltd from 2016 to 2023. DRB (1976-2023) was a solely family owned and run SME, passed from father to son. They were a complex engineering services, and turnkey project solutions provider, serving manufacturers in various sectors, but predominately, food, rail, and nuclear. They had a turnover of circa £12million and employed 150 staff.
Matt took over the business from his father in 2016 and managed the liquidation process last year.
In Matt’s own words:
We’ve all seen those speeches where someone stands up and tells us all how great they are and how they’ve won the Tour de France, raised perfect children, wrote a book and swum the Atlantic, all whilst founding, running, and growing a business they sold for £20m.
Well, that isn’t me and it never was!
So, when I was asked to talk to you, I decided I’d be me. I’d be authentic and uncomfortably honest.
I’ll talk about what happens when the plan fails. What it looks like when a business dies on your watch.
The realities and the lessons learned. The need for self-reflection, resilience and practising extreme level ownership.
In today’s world I passionately believe we all need to stop the “alpha- male”, toxic culture, and learn to be less zero sum and collaborate more than polarise, find huge solace and comfort in over sharing and creating a space where others can do the same.
