Each of the Chamber’s Quarterly Economic Surveys contains the unique Greater Manchester Index™ which we use to track the overall performance of the local economy.

The Index is a combination of seven key QES measures that best indicate the performance of the Greater Manchester economy:

  • Domestic sales
  • Domestic orders
  • International sales
  • International orders
  • Confidence in turnover
  • Confidence in profitability
  • Capacity utilisation

Last year, the Greater Manchester Index™ was on a downward trend, dropping from 20.4 in Q3 to 19.3 in Q4, reflecting the challenging conditions faced by many local businesses as they continued to deal with the long-term effects of Covid, rising energy prices and the new post-Brexit trading rules – you can see the Q4 QES presentation here.

But what will the Greater Manchester Index™ show in the first quarter of this year? While the media is always quick to talk about recession, there is more positive news on the construction sector, Manchester city centre has come to life again and local companies continue to succeed locally, nationally and internationally.

Make sure your feedback is included in the Greater Manchester Index™ by taking part in the first Quarterly Economic Survey of the year here.
