Independent training provider, Oldham Training Centre, is directly addressing the skills shortages affecting businesses in the region with the launch of a new set of training courses.

The all-new Leadership Course has been established following the release of survey data published in the Local Skills Improvement Plan for Greater Manchester*, which highlights that there is a shortage of leadership and management skills in businesses amongst existing staff and new recruits.

Over 3,000 employers contributed to the research for the Plan, which conveys the skills priorities for each sector within Greater Manchester, as well as the most frequently highlighted soft skills, digital skills and work-readiness skills. Over 26% of respondents said that they would like to see more training in leadership and management.

To help fill this training gap and meet the needs of employers, Oldham Training Centre’s Leadership Course is designed for individuals who are new to a management role or those considering a promotion. It focuses on giving learners the key skills to effectively lead a team, helping them to understand the most important lessons of leadership and where their role sits within their organisation.

Commenting on the lack of leadership skills highlighted by Greater Manchester employers, Melanie Bailey, Business Development Manager at Oldham Training Centre, said:

“We understand that, often, businesses simply don’t have the time to train individuals moving into a management role. Many new managers are people who were good at their existing job, but moving into a leadership position where they have to manage a team, without having the necessary training or experience required, can be daunting and lead to stress, anxiety and lower levels of efficiency.

“Our aim is to work with employers to help build confident managers and successful teams and our one-day courses with small groups of delegates in similar positions will provide a secure and helpful environment to help individuals thrive in their roles.”

The new Leadership Course complements the existing suite of courses offered by the team at Oldham Training Centre, which includes first aid and IOSH accreditations, forklift truck training, and a variety of electrical and mechanical engineering courses. The team also help around 120 learners achieve their apprenticeships each year.

Oldham Training Centre was established over 50 years ago and holds charitable status. It serves the businesses of Greater Manchester and beyond and it is estimated that over 700 employers have benefited from the centre’s services to meet a variety of training and business needs.
