Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM)

EU CBAM Support for UK Exporters - Simple, practical help to keep your EU trade moving.

If your business exports goods to the EU, you may be affected by the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM).

CBAM is a new EU system that links the price of imported goods to their carbon emissions. From 1 January 2026, EU importers are financially responsible for the emissions linked to certain products and they rely on UK suppliers to provide accurate emissions data.

If you can’t supply this information, your EU customers may face higher costs, delays, or decide to buy elsewhere. We’re here to help you keep clients and remain competitive.

What is CBAM, in plain English?

CBAM is designed to make sure imported goods face similar carbon costs to goods made in the EU. Although CBAM rules apply directly to EU importers, UK exporters play a critical role because your EU customer must report the emissions linked to your products and they need reliable data from you to do this correctly.

CBAM currently covers these sectors:

  • Iron and steel

  • Aluminium

  • Cement

  • Fertilisers

  • Electricity

  • Hydrogen

If you export any of these products to the EU, CBAM is already relevant to you.

Why does CBAM matter to my business?

From 2026, EU importers must declare emissions, and pay for them. If they fail to do so, or they have inaccurate data, then this can increase their CBAM costs. Importers are more likely to opt for suppliers who are CBAM ready.

For UK businesses - being able to explain and evidence emissions will keep you competitive, protect your EU relationships and prepare you for similar UK rules pending in 2027.
