When exporting goods, having the correct paperwork can be the difference between a smooth customs clearance experience and unexpected delays.
One of the most requested export documents is a Certificate of Origin. This is a document which confirms the origin of a good - and is sometimes a requirement for certain stakeholders when exporting goods.
Whilst applying for a Certificate of Origin might seem straightforward, small errors or omissions can lead to costly setbacks. Whether you're new to the process or simply want to improve accuracy, these three essential tips will help you get it right the first time and avoid common pitfalls.
1) Copy documentation exactly 📋
Make sure all the information you enter on the Certificate of Origin matches your supporting documents — including the invoice, packing list, and transport documents. Even minor differences like differing weights and product descriptions can lead to rejections or delays
I would suggest having your documents open alongside the application and going through box by box, populating each section exactly. After all, your supporting documents are what we use to check the details in your applications!
2) Upload all relevant documents 📂
Always include all supporting paperwork when you apply. This typically means the commercial invoice and if needed, proof of origin. Packing lists and transport documents are other documents that can be included. The more complete your submission, the faster your certificate can be approved without back-and-forth.
TOP TIP As a rule of thumb i would suggest uploading all the documents that you used to fill out your application.
3) Just apply! ✔️
Many hesitate or overthink the process — but if you have the goods ready to go and the paperwork in hand, don’t wait. Getting your application in early can help avoid last-minute issues, especially for urgent shipments or legalisation requests.
The worst thing we can do is reject an application, and when we do this, we always give feedback on how you can reapply correctly.
Applying for a Certificate of Origin doesn't have to be complicated, a bit of know how upfront can save time and future stress. Follow these tips and happy applying!
