Panel 1 – GM Region Vision 2050: GM Region has led the way in the UK over recent years, surpassing all growth projections. It’s unrecognisable from the city region that rose from the ashes of the ’96 bomb. It’s inherent positivity and resilience are unrivalled in the development world, where “Yes is the answer, now, what’s the question?”

So, taking on board that challenges are only opportunities in the making, we reflect on what have been the key development milestones in the last 25 years, but more importantly, focus on what will our region look and feel like in the next 25 years.

  • Speakers include:
  • Rebecca Heron, Manchester City Council
  • Damian Cross, GMCA
  • Caroline Baker, Cushman & Wakefield
  • Tom Higgins, Laing O'Rourke

Our bookable workshops will explore/unpack how we are going to achieve that vision:

Workshop 1 – Unlocking the Skills Puzzle:

Recent surveys suggest that 68% of the UK public wouldn’t even consider a career in construction. Worryingly, among students, that number jumps to 81%. Put another way, the construction sector is lowest across people’s perceptions of Prestige, pay and safety.

The public isn’t rejecting the reality of construction. They’re rejecting a narrow, updated image of it. This is a brand challenge and one that can be solved with smarter communication, education and outreach. Our panel will involve you in determining the right action plan to turn this around.

  • Speakers include:
  • Chris Fletcher, Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce 2025 & GMLSIP
  • Ryan Jones, SLG Agency
  • Louise Brown, Wigan and Leigh College
  • Michele Steel, Regeneration Brainery
  • Eric Wright Learning Foundation

Workshop 2 – Shouting about our Technology:

With AI, BIM, BEM, MMC and the like, we’ve got used to living in a world of TLA’s (3 letter Acronyms!). The process of design, procurement and construction has become digitized to the extent that we’re now almost living in the Gaming world. We build everything twice – once virtually and once for real. And with labour shortages a real issue and sector demand such as housing provision on the increase, is offsite the only scalable solution?

  • Speakers include:
  • Mark Buckle, Tilbury Douglas

Workshop 3 – Growing our GM Towns:

The last 10 years has seen demonstrable change in the way we’re starting to reinvent our town centres, fuelled by changes in behaviour post pandemic and a real commitment to public/private sector partnership and collaboration. Nowhere is this more visible than in our GM towns where some extraordinary projects are emerging to repurpose and revitalise often tired old assets.

We will explore the key challenges and opportunities to create places that work for local communities and ensure long term sustainable development.

  • Speakers include:
  • Aidan Thatcher, Wigan Council
  • Duncan Firth, Shift PM
  • Ed Britton, Deloitte

Panel 2 – Dialling up the Environment:

Manchester’s new Five-Year Climate Change Framework (2025–2030) is set to re-shape the city's journey toward zero carbon by 2038 - how can our industry support this journey?

With Manchester currently off-track on its decarbonisation journey, this workshop is a vital platform to explore how the property and construction sector—responsible for the majority of the city’s direct emissions—can lead the charge in accelerating progress.

We'll discuss the crucial role of climate adaptation, fair financing models for a ‘just transition,’ and the opportunities for the property and construction industry to thrive in a low-carbon economy.

  • Speakers include:
  • Mike Wilson, ARUP & Chair of MCCP
  • Brian Knowles, Casey Group
  • Peter Bartley, AEW Architects
  • Helen Gribbon, Renaissance Engineers
